Best of world cinema 2018

2018 had been a great year for world cinema, movies and documentaries from the digital platforms like Netflix and Amazon Prime video have also gathered great attention and appreciation.
What is world cinema? World cinema includes high quality films made outside the Hollywood studios(If one consider Hollywood the best), They dominate the international viewership.

With a huge number of films released in 2018, blockbusters to low budget films. I have watched some of the highly recommended movies and of which, I have selected the best 5(In no particular order or preference).

5)Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri

The basic plot of the film revolves around a mother, who challenges the local authorities to solve her daughter's murder when they fail to catch the culprit.
It's a masterpiece, every character the writer created has a strong screen presence and meaning in the narrative, It's a funny, heartfelt journey about life, forgiveness. It's a drama nailed perfectly. It presented the crime and its nature which is as simple as black and white.
The performances from Frances McDormand and Woody Harrelson are top notch. Highly recommended(Don't torrent it okay?)
Directed by-Martin McDonagh.

4) Black Panther

One of the best MCU film of all time, That's how you nail a superhero film, the dark yet magnum cinematic universe, The character graph of each actor, Post credit scenes, Stan lee cameos(ahh.. that nostalgia of a Marvel film) Black panther first appeared in Civil War, and now it's a movie on it's own, The beautiful yet fascinating world of Wakanda coupled with a strong screenplay, Top notch VFX, Hand to hand combat, Performances, It's a filmmaking school on it's own. T'Challa turned into ashes in Infinity war, But I hope we will see more of him in Endgame(Quantum realm, Hell yeah!)
In the list of highest grossing films of 2018, it stands second to Infinity war.
Directed by- Ryan Coogler.
Written by- Ryan Coogler, Joe Robert Cole.

3)Green Book

A working class Italian-American bouncer becomes the driver of an African-American classical pianist on the tour of venues through the American south. What makes the film a must watch is the great story and very well written characters, It shows the complexities of a human character, the imperfectness that makes us stand out from the crowd, The performances from Viggo Mortensen and Mahesrshala Ali are perfect and the banter that they share in the movie are nothing but prominent to see, It's a story of friendship against all odds. The craftsmanship of the director and each and every cast and crew is commendable.
Directed by- Peter Farrelly.

2)Roma

The film shows the life of a middle-class family's maid in Mexico city in the early 1970s.
The film contain many background Mexican symbolism which can be tough to relate to a normal moviegoer. It's a film that celebrates the calmness of life yet very hard-hitting, Life is full of pain, but it continues to go on, The cinematography is taken to a whole new level. This is amazing work of art, true to it's substance and reality, Also the film is in greyscale, not in black and white. It's a highly recommended movie, but do read about the context before watching it. It stars Yalitza Aparicio, Marina de Tavira(I have to google the name and spelling). Available on Netflix.
Directed by-  Alfonso Cuaron.

1)Shirkers

Shirkers is a documentary film, revolving around the reality of a teenager named Sandi Tan who shoots a road movie with her mentor Georges, who then ran away with all the footage, and the 16mm film was recovered 20 years later, sending Tan on a personal odyssey in search of Georges.
The film shows the mixed emotions of happiness, disappointment, anger. One can actually feel the frustration of Sandi tan, and her crew of talented story tellers from the frames. It's a crazy story of filmmaking, and highly recommended. It's available on Netflix.
Directed by- Sandi Tan.

I would also like to mention The night comes for us(Indonesian), Shoplifters(Japanese),The Ballad of buster Scruggs(Netflix).
